Born 1964, Master of Arts, Finnish citizen. Member of Biomaterials division management team since March 2012. Responsible for communications, marketing communications, multisite certification and until November 2014 also sustainability for Biomaterials division. Prior to this position managerial communications and sustainability positions at Stora Enso, Metsä-Botnia, Uponor and Helvar Merca Group with international focus. Stora Enso Pathbuilders’ programme 2012-2013 and Pathbreakers’ programme in 2015, both programmes focusing on strategy and innovation with IMD.

As a senior agri-food expert in Royal HaskoningDHV, Wil regularly leads design teams in the area of Chain Architecture  – a unique methodology for securing and implementing logistics solutions across supply chains. Wil’s expertise and solid track record in developing solutions for logistics and micro climate issues have been applied to solving numerous food related challenges as well as in modelling and designing sustainable supply chains. Wil is board member and adviser for several commissions and consortia in the food industry, refrigeration and sustainable (circular) production fields.  His views and contributions are highly sought after and have featured in a number of publications.

Economic Implications of Water Scarcity and Shortages | The Future of Water Requires a Sustainable, Blue Path

Without water, neither small businesses nor major global industries can function.

Not family farms or major agribusinesses. Not energy production facilities or computer manufacturers or steel companies. Similarly, poor water quality, or limited or unreliable access to water means higher costs for all businesses – and all consumers. Water scarcity means greater risks for a community’s long-term viability and a negative impact on their competitiveness. It also means that a community’s ability to grow and create jobs is at risk. Regardless of whether water has become the new oil, one thing is certain: water is ironically both taken for granted and serves as the engine of our economy. If not properly managed, water scarcity will directly affect the local ability to grow and create jobs.

Economic Implications of Water Scarcity and Shortages.

Right now, many companies already consider water resources when making decisions about where to invest or locate facilities. And they are giving preference to areas where water risks are lowest. These businesses understand what policymakers are now coming to realize: When water resources are unhealthy or unreliable, businesses cannot grow and cannot hire or sustain a workforce. How FoodDrinkEurope works

How FoodDrinkEurope came about

UNICE (the Union of Industrial and Employers’ Confederations of Europe) founded the CIAA (Confederation of Food and Drink Industries of the EEC) in 1982 to replace their Commission of Food and Drink Industries.

Registered as an international association under Belgian law, CIAA’s creation provided Europe’s food and drink industry with its own independent organisation. Since then, CIAA became a key stakeholder, working with European and international institutions on issues impacting on the food and drink industry.

On 23 June 2011, CIAA opened a dynamic new chapter in its history, becoming FoodDrinkEurope. With its new, immediately identifiable name and logo, FoodDrinkEurope will continue to speak for the industry, representing both the industry’s traditions and potential.

Selcuk Yildirim is Professor and head of Center for Food Technology and Packaging at the Institute of Food and Beverage Innovation, Zürich University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland. He received BSc. Degree in Food Engineering and MSc. Degree in Process Engineering. After he did his PhD he continued doing research as Post-Doc and Group Leader at ETH-Zurich. He worked several years at the Packaging Industry (European R&D Center of Alcan Packaging) before joining the ZHAW as Professor and researcher.

In close collaboration with the industry, his group aims to develop of innovative packaging technologies for optimal food quality and food safety. His main research fields are: development of active packaging technologies (oxygen scavengers, antimicrobial and antioxidant films), integration of packaging in food processing, and development of consumer friendly packaging.

Selcuk Yildirim is author of numerous book chapters, peer-reviewed publications and patents. He is currently management committee member of the European COST Actions: MP1206, “Electrospun Nano-fibres for bio inspired composite materials and innovative industrial applications” and FP1405, “Active and intelligent fibre-based packaging – innovation and market introduction (ActInPak)”. He is also in the steering committee and leads the Working Group “Innovation and Development” at the COST Action FP1405.

In 2015 Selcuk Yildirim founded the “Packaging Innovation Network Switzerland” and he has been / is the leading research partner of the network.

Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) is an applied university with more than 9000 students studying at the 24 bachelor degree and 11 master`s degree programs. The ZHAW maintains some 30 research institutes and centers, working together to carry out research and development projects with the national and international partners. Center of Food Technology and Process Engineering is located at the Institute of Food and Beverage Innovation at ZHAW.

Center focuses performs research in the area of food packaging and especially focuses on the development of new packaging materials and processes. The group is involved in several national and international research projects and programs in the food packaging area.
